Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus (the tube connecting your mouth and stomach), causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat known as heartburn. When acid reflux occurs more than twice a week, it may be diagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Diet plays a major role in controlling symptoms — avoiding trigger foods and eating smaller meals can significantly reduce discomfort.
